Cardboard

Today I had to make an abstract of one of the other sculptures from cardboard. I chose to make an abstract version of the alligator sculpture I made earlier in the semester. I basically but out to side view pieces and glued them to two leg pieces using the hot glue gun. Then I made a center piece to show the roughness of the back of the gator.

Hollowing of the enlargement

I had to hollow out the enlarged clay cup that I made. I had to let it dry out for a while first because the clay was to soft to turn over. After a couple weeks of slow drying I was able to tip it over and carve out some of the clay from the center of the cup to keep it from cracking. Now I just have to let it finish drying.

Fine Arts Garden

We went to visit the fine arts garden to take a look at the various things there. We saw some of the basic tools they use when working with stone such as pneumatic chisels, polishing clothes etc. We also saw some people working with plaster sculptures. The final thing we saw was a bronze casting. It was interesting seeing them heat up the bronze then pour it into the various casts.

Hollowing of the gater, and drinking from a head.

Today was the day to hollow out the gator. I had to push two tables together and lay on the floor to get to the bottom of it. It was to heavy and fragile to just flip over and go to work on. It did not take to long to get it done so I did not have to lay down on the floor for to long. Next I had to make a bowl of some sort. I did not want just any bowl though, I wanted a human head bowl just to make it a little more interesting. So I made a head, cut the very top off, hollowed it out and presto I had a bowl. The teacher then suggested I make a lid for it, so I made one that if you use your imagination looks kind of like the top of a head with a pony tail handle.

Alligator or Crocodile?

Today I had to make an animal. I was playing around with a lump of clay trying to come up with something and next thing I know I have an alligator head. The only problem was it was kind of big. I had to add a good bit more clay to get the body and tail. To bad it was to heavy to be able to make it standing up, instead it looks like it is flying with its legs back. Next week I get to hollow it out but for now it has to dry kind of slow.

The snail

This week I tried making a snail on some soft brick type stuff. Unfortunately today was not my day for making art. It seemed everything I did did not work out as planned, including my attempted drawing of the snail on the brick. I finally stopped after a while and took a break to avoid making a bigger mess of the mess I created.

Week 5 Enlarging

This week we made large sculptures of small things using clay. I used a smashed plastic cup which ended up being a bit harder than I thought it would be. It seemed to be almost impossible to get every crease and angle right. After completing the sculpture we had to remove it from the wood board using some wire and then leave it to harden a bit over the next week. Next week it will have to be hollowed out a bit so it has room to move while it dries.
